Dear Parents/guardians,

 

         My name is Gabriela Trejo and I will be your child’s 6th grade English Language Arts teacher for the 2017-2018 school year here at Liberty Memorial Middle School. I look forward to getting to know your child’s individual learning styles in order to support them in learning. I am confident that we will have a successful learning experience.

Course objective:  To successfully complete the 6th grade ELA TEKS as outlined by the State of Texas; to become creative, analytical, and effective writers; to edit properly; to be college ready. The TEKS can be found online at www.tea.state.tx.us

Supply List: 1” binder, 5 dividers, 1 spiral notebook, notebook paper, lead pencils.

Class Rules: Respect yourself, the teacher, your classmates, and school property.  Follow directions given by all staff members.  Be on time and be prepared.  Raise your hand and talk only with permission. Remain in your desk unless you have asked permission to leave your chair.  Follow all rules according to Code of Conduct.

Substitute/Guest Teachers:  The expectation at LMMS is that students show respect to ALL people in our school.  When teachers are absent, this respect should extend to your guest teachers.  Please show them the utmost respect.

Entering the classroom: Enter the classroom quietly. Get your binder and spiral notebook from the designated cabinet. Start your warm up.  Wait for further instructions. 

Late Work: All work is due in class unless the teacher gives extra time at home.  Late homework will receive a 70 the first day it is late and a 50 the second day.  After the third day, the student receives a zero.

Tardies: 3 tardies = referral= lunch detention  

Absences/Makeups/Grading:

1. When you are absent, YOU are responsible for ASKING for makeup work.  Failure to do so will NOT give you more time to make up the work.

2. Excused absences will have the same number of days absent to make up the work.  (Out 2 days, 2 days to make it up).  Failure to do so WILL NOT result in more time.  

3. Failure to put a name on the paper will result in points offs the first nine weeks then it will be thrown away at teacher discretion.

4. I will not give make-up work or extra credit at the end of the 9 weeks. Do not come to me asking for it.

 

Restroom Pass: Nine passes will be given per nine weeks.  Use one per week to ration properly.  If student does not present pass, permission will not be granted.

Grading Procedure: Daily work, quizzes = 40%/Tests and projects = 60%

Course Outline: (subject to change)

 1st 9-Wks: Subject and predicate, run-ons, fragments, end marks, capitalization, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, How and Why CAFÉ, and thesis statements

2nd 9-Wks: Prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, simple/compound/ complex sentences, commas, and continuations with capitalization, transitions, appositives, punctuation, commonly confused words, and complete compositions

3rd 9-Wks: Revising and editing passages, poetry, expository writing, verbs/helping verbs review, pronouns review, adjectives review, prepositions review

4th 9-Wks: Persuasive writing, college and career research project, imaginative stories, figurative language, and historical figure research project
